1893 in a garden in Tanjong Pagar, Agnes Joachim and Armenian Singaporean horticulturist, crossed Papilionanthe teres with Papilionanthe hookerkia to create Papilionanthe Miss Joaquin, the world’s first registered orchid hybrid.
In 1950s, Orchid Diplomacy bloomed,Aranthera Anne Black was the first VIP named orchid, sparking a traditional of VIP orchids to honour visiting dignitaries. With 3500 hybrids registered (nearly half-vandaceous).
